The Ausbildung is Germany's structured apprenticeship system: paid vocational training while you learn a trade, profession, or healthcare skill. For Kerala students, it is one of the most underused routes into Germany. This page answers the 12 most common questions about Ausbildung in 2026. For our flagship Germany healthcare pathway specifically, see our Germany Healthcare programme page.
1.What is Ausbildung and how is it different from a regular degree?
Ausbildung is Germany's dual vocational training system. You spend 3 to 4 days a week working at a real employer (hospital, factory, hotel, IT company) and 1 to 2 days a week at a vocational school (Berufsschule). The training is paid from day one. At the end, you receive a recognised national qualification and are typically offered a permanent job by the training employer. Unlike a Masters degree, Ausbildung is hands-on, employer-led, and produces directly employable workers. It is the backbone of the German workforce.
2.What occupations can I do an Ausbildung in?
Over 320 recognised Ausbildung occupations exist. The most common for Indian students are: Healthcare (nursing, geriatric care, paramedical, dental assistance, medical assistance), Hospitality (hotel management, restaurant service, culinary arts, event management), IT (system integration, application development), Mechatronics and engineering (automotive technician, industrial electronics), Logistics, and Trade (retail management, customer service). For Kerala healthcare professionals specifically, the nursing Ausbildung is the strongest opportunity.
3.Do I get paid during the Ausbildung?
Yes. Ausbildung trainees are paid a structured monthly stipend that increases each year of training. In 2026, healthcare Ausbildung pays approximately €1,200 to €1,400 per month in the first year, €1,300 to €1,500 in the second year, and €1,400 to €1,700 in the third year (gross). After taxes and social security contributions, take-home is roughly €900 to €1,200 per month. Accommodation and food typically cost €700 to €900 in mid-sized German cities, so most Ausbildung trainees break even or save modestly during training.
4.What language level do I need for Ausbildung?
Most healthcare Ausbildung programmes require German B1 at the time of arrival in Germany and B2 by the end of the first year. Non-healthcare Ausbildung (hospitality, IT, mechatronics) often requires B1 for the visa and accepts B2 attained during the training period. Reaching B1 from zero typically takes 6 to 9 months of focused study (4 to 5 hours daily); B2 takes another 4 to 6 months. Our Trivandrum and Kochi German language centres run A1 to B2 in approximately 14 months full-time.
5.How long does an Ausbildung last?
Most Ausbildung programmes last 2 to 3.5 years depending on the trade. Healthcare nursing Ausbildung is 3 years (Generalist Pflegeausbildung introduced in 2020). Some shorter trades (Pflegehilfskraft, helper-level care) take 1 to 2 years. After completing Ausbildung, you typically transition into a permanent employment contract with the same employer, or move to another employer with your recognised qualification.
6.What is the difference between Ausbildung and Anerkennung for Kerala nurses?
Anerkennung (recognition) is the process where your existing Indian BSc Nursing or GNM qualification is officially recognised in Germany. If your Indian qualification is judged equivalent to a German nursing qualification, you can work directly as a nurse after some adaptation training. If there are gaps, you do an Anerkennung adaptation phase, typically 6 to 18 months. Ausbildung is the alternative for Kerala students without a nursing background who want to enter healthcare via the apprenticeship route. Most BSc Nursing graduates from Kerala go via Anerkennung, not Ausbildung.
7.Can I bring my family during the Ausbildung?
Yes. After arrival in Germany on the Ausbildung visa, your spouse and children under 18 can apply for family reunification. The spouse needs basic German (A1) for the visa. The spouse can apply for an unrestricted work permit upon arrival. Family reunification timeline is typically 6 to 9 months from when you apply at the German embassy in India. Children can attend free German state schools.
8.What happens after Ausbildung is complete?
Three pathways open up: (1) Permanent employment with your training employer (most common; about 75 to 80 percent of Ausbildung graduates are retained). (2) Move to another employer with your nationally recognised qualification. (3) Continue to higher qualifications, such as Meister (master craftsman) certification or even university degrees. For nurses specifically, after 3-year Ausbildung you are a fully licensed Pflegefachmann/frau with full nursing licence.
9.How do I find an Ausbildung position from India?
Most healthcare Ausbildung positions are filled through structured employer recruitment programmes managed by recognised agencies. Hospital groups like Helios, Asklepios, Sana, and Vitanas have ongoing Indian recruitment streams. Specialised consultancies (like Cokonet Overseas with our Germany Healthcare pathway) manage the matching, contracts, language training, and visa process end-to-end. Direct self-application from India is possible for IT and engineering Ausbildung but rare for healthcare due to language and credential verification complexity.
10.What is the salary after completing nursing Ausbildung in Germany?
A newly licensed Pflegefachmann or Pflegefachfrau (registered nurse) in Germany earns €3,200 to €3,800 gross per month in 2026, depending on the federal state and employer (public vs private). After 3 to 5 years of experience, this rises to €3,800 to €4,500. Specialist nurses (ICU, OT, oncology, paediatric) earn an additional €200 to €500 monthly. After tax and social security deductions, take-home is typically 60 to 65 percent of gross. Combined with German cost of living, this allows for comfortable savings of €800 to €1,200 monthly.
11.Is Ausbildung better than a Masters degree route to Germany?
It depends on your background and goals. Ausbildung gets you to permanent residency faster (3-year training plus 2 to 4 years working = 5 to 7 years to PR) and you earn from day one. Masters degree takes 1 to 2 years of study (no earning, costs €15,000 to €25,000) plus typically 2 to 3 years on a job-seeker or work visa before PR eligibility. Masters is the better choice if you want a higher-skilled professional role (engineer, data scientist, researcher); Ausbildung is the better choice if you want a guaranteed pathway with structured employer support, particularly in healthcare and skilled trades.
12.What is the visa called and how long does it take to process?
The Ausbildung visa is the 'Visum zur beruflichen Ausbildung' (vocational training visa) under Section 16a of the German Residence Act. Processing time at the German Consulate in India is typically 8 to 12 weeks. You need: a confirmed Ausbildung contract from a German employer, proof of B1 German (some cases require A2 with B1 commitment), funds proof (€11,208 in a blocked account, equivalent to one year's living costs), and standard documents (passport, biometric photo, application form). Cokonet Overseas manages the end-to-end process including the blocked account opening with our banking partners.
