The UK student visa processing time from India is usually 3 weeks for applications made outside the UK, according to UK Visas and Immigration. That clock starts only after you complete your identity check at the visa application centre, so the real timeline depends on how quickly you secure your CAS, prove your funds and book an appointment.
This guide is for Kerala students planning the January or September 2027 intake. It covers the official standard, priority and super priority options, the earliest date you can apply, the 28-day funds rule that holds up many files, and a practical timeline so your visa lands well before your course starts.
1.How long the UK student visa takes from India
The 3-week figure is counted in UK working days (Monday to Friday) and includes UK public holidays, but not Indian ones. Most complete applications are decided inside that window; files that need extra checks or documents take longer.
Because you can apply as early as 6 months before your course, the safest plan is simple: apply as soon as your CAS and funds are in order, rather than close to your travel date.
2.When the 3-week clock starts
The sequence from India is: complete the online application, pay the application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge, book and attend your appointment at the visa application centre, and then wait for the decision. If appointments are scarce in your city during peak season, that wait sits outside the 3-week figure.
For a step-by-step walkthrough of the application itself, read our UK visa application guide.
3.Priority and super priority: paying for speed
UKVI says you may be able to pay for a faster decision and that you will be told whether it is available when you apply — availability depends on location and capacity, so do not build your plan around it. Treat priority as a safety net for a late CAS, not as the default route.
Weekend or bank-holiday appointments with super priority take two working days. Full fee details in rupees are in our UK student visa fees guide.
4.What must be ready before you apply
The core documents:
- CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from your university, issued after you accept an unconditional offer and meet its conditions (often a deposit).
- Proof of funds for your course fees not yet paid, plus living costs (see the next section).
- Passport valid for your travel.
- English evidence as specified on your CAS — IELTS for UKVI or another accepted test where required. Cokonet runs IELTS coaching in-house.
- TB test certificate from an approved clinic, required for Indian applicants staying longer than six months.
5.The 28-day funds rule that delays files
This is where Indian files most often slip by weeks: funds that dip below the required amount for even one day, money moved in too late to complete 28 days, or statements that end more than 31 days before the application. Start the 28-day period as soon as your course fee balance and living costs are known.
If an education loan forms part of your funds, the loan sanction letter needs to be ready in time — see our guide to education loans without collateral. For monthly budgeting once you arrive, read cost of living in the UK.
6.A timeline for the January and September 2027 intakes
A working plan for September 2027, the main UK intake:
- By March 2027: offers in hand and English test completed.
- April to June 2027: accept your firm offer, pay the deposit, request your CAS; start the 28-day funds period.
- From 6 months before your start date: apply as soon as CAS and funds are ready.
- Allow 3 weeks after biometrics for the decision, plus appointment availability — and avoid leaving it to August.
For January 2027, you are already inside the window: CAS and funds should be sorted now, with applications going in by early November where possible. Also note the Graduate Route is changing — read our UK Graduate Route FAQ for the 2027 position.
7.How to avoid delays in peak season
July to September is the busiest period for Indian student applications. The habits that keep files moving:
- Apply early in your 6-month window rather than close to travel.
- Check your CAS details — name, passport number, course dates and fees — before you apply.
- Keep funds untouched for the full 28 days.
- Book your TB test and appointment together so neither holds the other up.
- Answer requests fast if UKVI asks for more documents.
A free review of your timeline takes one call — contact us or WhatsApp +91 62385 94143.
8.If your UK student visa is refused
A refusal is not the end of a UK plan, but it does cost time — which is one more reason to apply early in your six-month window.
The refusal letter sets out the reasons and tells you whether you can ask for an administrative review. Read it carefully before doing anything else: most refusals for Indian students trace back to financial evidence (funds below the requirement, or held for fewer than 28 days), CAS details that do not match the documents, or missing documents such as the TB certificate.
If the issue is fixable, a fresh application with the problem corrected is often faster than a review. Your university's international office will also need to know, because a refusal can affect your CAS and start date. Bring the refusal letter to a counselling call and we will tell you the quickest honest route forward.
