Australia is the country Kerala families pick when they want sunshine, work-life balance, and a migration pathway. From there, Skilled Independent Visa or employer-sponsored streams lead to PR.

Why Australia

Four reasons Kerala families pick Australia.

Australia is for Kerala families who want the lifestyle and weather, plus a clear skilled migration pathway. Plus three other things matter.

⏱️
Post-study work

Longest in the English-speaking world

Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) gives you 2 years after a Bachelors, 3 years after a Masters, 4 years after a PhD. Regional study locations add a bonus year. Open work permit, no employer sponsorship needed. Spouses also get full work rights.

☀️
Lifestyle

Weather, beaches, work-life balance

If lifestyle is part of the calculation, Australia is hard to beat. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide all have established Malayali communities. The 4-week annual leave + public holidays + low overtime culture is significantly better than UK or US workplaces.

🛂
Skilled migration

Skilled Independent Visa subclass 189

Australia's 189 visa is a points-based PR pathway that does not require employer sponsorship. Age, education, work experience, English score, and Skilled Occupation List (SOL) determine your points. Most Kerala students with Masters + 2 years of Australian work cross the threshold.

🏥
Healthcare and trades

Strong demand from AHPRA roles

Healthcare is one of Australia's persistent skill shortage areas. AHPRA registration (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) for nurses, allied health, doctors all have established pathways. Salary range AUD 65,000-95,000 for entry-level registered nurses.

The full journey

Nine to twelve months from Trivandrum to an Australian classroom.

Australia has two main intakes: February (the big one) and July. The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement adds an interview step that most other destinations do not have.

1

Profile review and university shortlist

2 weeks

Senior counsellor reviews academic background, target field, budget. The big choice for Australia: Group of Eight (premium, expensive) vs regional university (cheaper, longer post-study visa). 5-8 programs shortlisted.

2

IELTS or PTE preparation

6 to 10 weeks

Most Australian Masters need IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 minimum per band). PTE Academic 58+ is widely accepted and faster to clear. We run weekend batches at Cokonet Academy.

3

Application and offer letters

4 to 10 weeks

Most universities accept direct online applications through StudyLink. SOP, transcripts, LOR coordination. Most students get 3-5 offers.

4

CoE and GTE statement preparation

2 to 3 weeks

Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) issued by university after you accept and pay deposit. We then prepare your Genuine Temporary Entrant statement, the document that explains why you intend to study temporarily in Australia.

5

Student visa filing (subclass 500)

4 to 12 weeks

Visa 500 filed online. AUD 710 government fee plus health insurance (OSHC) AUD 600-900 per year. Medical exam at panel doctor. Biometrics if requested. Some students get visa interview by immigration officer.

6

Pre-departure and landing

2 to 4 weeks

Forex, OSHC activated, accommodation booking (university residence or share house), Australian bank account paperwork, TFN application, airport pickup arranged through Cokonet alumni network.

Frequently asked

Australia-specific questions Kerala families ask.

What is the GTE statement and why does it matter so much?+
Genuine Temporary Entrant is Australia's requirement to prove you genuinely intend to study temporarily and not use the student visa as a back-door to migration. This sounds contradictory given the post-study work visa exists, but the immigration officer evaluates your study plan, ties to India, and financial situation. A poorly drafted GTE is a common refusal reason. We draft this specifically for your profile.
Regional study, what does it actually mean?+
Studying outside Sydney and Melbourne. Locations like Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Canberra, Gold Coast, Wollongong, Newcastle, and most rural campuses count. Bonus: +1 year on the 485 Graduate Visa, +5 to 15 points on Skilled migration. Reality check: smaller cities can mean smaller Malayali communities and fewer big-corporate job opportunities, so weigh both sides.
Group of Eight is expensive. Is the brand worth it for Indian students?+
Honest answer: depends. Group of Eight matters for academic credibility in international research and for entry into Fortune-500 firms. For Australian PR purposes, all CRICOS-registered universities give the same 485 visa eligibility. Many Kerala students go to good mid-tier universities (Deakin, La Trobe, RMIT, Macquarie) and end up in the exact same Australian jobs as Group of Eight grads.
How do PR points work for skilled migration?+
189 Skilled Independent needs minimum 65 points; in reality cut-offs run 80-95+ depending on occupation. Points come from age (max 30 for 25-32 yrs), education (15 for Masters, 20 for PhD), English (max 20 for IELTS 8.0+), Australian education (5), regional study (5), Australian skilled work (5-20), partner skills (10). A 28-year-old with Australian Masters + 2 years skilled work + IELTS 7.0 typically scores 80-85 without partner bonus.
What's the AHPRA route for healthcare professionals?+
Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency registers all healthcare workers. Kerala-trained nurses (BSc Nursing) typically need to complete an English requirement (IELTS 7.0 or OET B), an AHPRA application (AUD 685+), and sometimes a bridging program (AUD 12-18K, 6-12 months). After AHPRA registration, you can work as Registered Nurse on AUD 75-95K starting salary.
Has Australia tightened student visa rules?+
Yes, modestly. From 2024, the financial proof requirement went up (now AUD 24,505 minimum for one year). GTE scrutiny increased. Subclass 485 has been restricted to graduates from CRICOS-registered universities (some private colleges lost eligibility). Healthcare and STEM occupations still highly favoured. We stay on top of rule changes and adjust recommendations.
Is Australia better than Canada for PR?+
Different trade-offs. Canada: faster PR (4-5 years vs 5-7 in Australia), larger Kerala diaspora, harsher winters but cheaper cost of living. Australia: longer post-study work visa, lifestyle and weather, slightly higher salaries, more expensive cost of living. For Kerala families with healthcare backgrounds, Australia's AHPRA route is often faster than Canadian provincial nursing registration. We compare both in detail on the counsellor call.
