Canada · Most-chosen by Kerala

From Kerala
to a Canadian degree,
then a PR pathway.

Canada is where Kerala goes when the goal is settle, not just study. The 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit gives you longer than any other major destination to find a career role. Express Entry then turns that work experience into permanent residence, often in 4 to 5 years total from landing.

Why Canada

Four reasons Kerala families pick Canada.

Canada is the most-chosen destination for Kerala students in 2026 for one reason: the legal pathway to settlement is genuinely clear and well-trodden. Plus three other things matter.

🛂
Settlement

Express Entry: clearest PR route in the world

Canada's Express Entry system scores you on age, education, language, and Canadian work experience. Once you have 1 year of skilled work after the PGWP, your score typically crosses the cut-off and you get an Invitation to Apply. Total time from landing to PR: usually 4 to 5 years.

⏱️
Work permit

3-year PGWP, longest in the world

After a 2-year or longer Masters / college program, you get a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit. Open work permit, no employer sponsorship needed. Three full years to find your career role, switch jobs, build the Canadian work experience that Express Entry requires.

🤝
Diaspora

Largest Kerala diaspora outside the Gulf

Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver all have major Malayali communities with churches, cultural associations, Onam events, food shops, family network support. Many Kerala students have cousins or family in Canada who help with the first month of settling.

👪
Family-friendly

Spouse work permit + open immigration

Spouses of Masters and PhD students automatically get an open spousal work permit, valid for the full duration of your study + PGWP. Children attend Canadian public schools free of charge as residents. Healthcare via provincial plans (Ontario, BC, Alberta vary slightly).

The full journey

Eight to ten months from Trivandrum to a Canadian classroom.

Canada has three main intakes: September (the big one), January, and May. SDS (Student Direct Stream) visas process in 20 calendar days for Indian students.

3

Most universities accept direct online applications. Ontario universities use OUAC (centralised portal). SOP, transcripts, LOR coordination. Most students receive 3 to 6 offers.

4

Open a Canadian GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate, CAD 20,635 deposit for 2026) at SBI Canada, ICICI Canada, or Scotiabank. Pay first semester tuition. Both required for SDS stream visa.

Frequently asked

Canada-specific questions Kerala families ask.

University vs college, which is right? +
University = Masters or Bachelors degree, higher tuition (CAD 25-40K/yr), strong global recognition. College = Diploma or Post-Graduate Certificate, lower tuition (CAD 14-22K/yr), same 3-year PGWP eligibility if program is 2+ years. For Kerala students whose primary goal is Canadian PR (not the brand of the degree), public colleges like Conestoga, Centennial, Seneca are a smart cost-efficient route.
Has Canada tightened student visa rules recently? +
Yes. Since January 2024, Canada introduced a cap on study permits and stricter Provincial Attestation Letter requirements. Spousal open work permits are now restricted to spouses of Masters / PhD / select Bachelors students (not college diploma students). PGWP eligibility for certain college programs has been narrowed. Many of these changes affect college-route students more than university-route students. We track the current rules and advise accordingly.
What's the SDS stream and do I qualify? +
Student Direct Stream is the fast-track visa pathway for Indian students with IELTS 6.0+ overall and full first-year tuition paid + GIC deposit. Processing in 20 calendar days vs 12 weeks for regular stream. About 75% of our Canada students go via SDS.
How much can I earn part-time during studies? +
Off-campus: 20 hours/week during academic term, unlimited during scheduled breaks. Typical pay CAD 16-22/hour for tech-related part-time, CAD 14-18/hour for retail / hospitality. Most students earn CAD 12,000-18,000 per year during studies, which covers a significant portion of living costs.
What's the Express Entry CRS score I should target? +
2026 cut-offs typically range 470-540. A Kerala student with Masters degree + IELTS 7.0 + 1 year Canadian skilled work usually scores 460-490. Adding a Provincial Nomination (worth 600 points) puts you well above any cut-off. We help you plan for this from year 1.
Is Quebec different from the rest of Canada? +
Yes, significantly. Quebec has its own immigration system (Programme de l'Expérience Québécoise, PEQ), French language requirement, and separate provincial selection. For Kerala students with no French background, we typically recommend the rest of Canada (Ontario, BC, Alberta) over Quebec unless there's a specific reason.
What about the rumours of long IRCC processing delays? +
Genuine concern. Study permit processing for non-SDS applicants has gone from 6 weeks to 12+ weeks. SDS still holds at 20 days for qualifying Indian applicants. PR processing (Express Entry) has remained at 6 months. We file via SDS whenever eligible to avoid the longer queue.
Can I include my parents in PR application later? +
Yes. After you become a Canadian PR, you can sponsor your parents through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). This is a lottery-based application with high demand but moderate annual quota. You need to meet minimum income thresholds (MNI) for 3 consecutive tax years before applying.
