When Duolingo is the right pick

Three situations where Duolingo wins.

Duolingo is not always the best English test. It's the best test for specific scenarios. Pick it when one of these fits your case.

You need a result fast

Application deadline next week? Duolingo gives you results in 48 hours. IELTS computer-delivered takes 3-5 days; paper-based 13 days; TOEFL 6-10 days. Duolingo wins by miles when speed matters.

💰

Budget is tight

Around US$59 per attempt (about ₹5,000), vs ₹14,700 PTE, ₹19,000 IELTS, ₹17,500 TOEFL. If you need to take the test multiple times to hit a target, Duolingo costs the least.

🏠

You want it from home

Done from your own laptop with a webcam, no test centre visit. Available 24/7 worldwide. Some students who live far from British Council or ETS centres find this the simplest option.

⚠️
When NOT to pick Duolingo

Work visas / immigration: Most countries do not accept Duolingo for skilled worker visas, PR applications, or professional licensing (NMC, AHPRA). IELTS or PTE is required for those.

Top universities: Some top-50 universities still prefer TOEFL or IELTS. Check your target university's accepted exams before booking Duolingo.

Healthcare licensing: Always requires OET or IELTS, never Duolingo.

Duolingo scoring

Scored 10 to 160. One single overall number.

Unlike IELTS or TOEFL, Duolingo doesn't break the score into sections. You get one number. Universities set their minimum based on this.

80-95
≈ IELTS 5.5
Below most Masters
Functional but not academic level. Good for short courses, exchanges, language schools.
Foundation programs, some language schools. Not enough for most Masters.
100-115
≈ IELTS 6.0-6.5
Most US universities
Functional academic English. Many US public state universities, some Canada, some Australia accept this range.
State universities in USA. Some Canadian universities. Many UK Pre-Masters programs.
120-130
≈ IELTS 7.0
The sweet spot
What most Kerala students should target. Comfortable academic English.
Most US private universities, top Canadian programs, Australian Group of Eight universities.
135-150
≈ IELTS 7.5-8.0
Strong
Near-native command. Strong nuance.
Top-20 US universities, Ivy League shortlists, funded PhD programs.
155-160
Excellent
The ceiling
Near-native or native-level. Rare even with intensive prep.
Top-10 US universities, scholarship considerations. Practically anything above 130 is treated the same.

Frequently asked

Duolingo-specific questions Kerala students ask.

Is Duolingo English Test treated the same as IELTS or TOEFL? +
By universities, yes (in most cases). By visa offices and immigration, no. Most universities now accept Duolingo for admission, but very few countries accept it for work visa or PR applications. If you plan to settle in your study destination, take IELTS or PTE for the visa side, even if Duolingo gets you admitted.
How is the test structured? +
Adaptive 1-hour test with 12 task types: read a word, type the word from audio, read aloud sentence, describe an image, write about a prompt, listen and select, and others. Difficulty adjusts based on your answers. You're also recorded throughout via webcam (this is what makes it an 'AI proctored' exam).
What is the technical setup needed? +
Laptop or desktop computer with a working webcam and microphone. Stable internet connection. A quiet room with no other people. No notes, no second device, no phones. Photo ID required. We coach you on the room setup specifically because students lose attempts to room-prep failures.
What does the exam cost? +
Around US$59 per attempt, paid directly to Duolingo (about ₹5,000). Plus Cokonet coaching ₹6,500 to ₹7,500. Total ₹11,500 to ₹12,500 for first attempt. Re-attempts cost just US$59 each, no coaching surcharge from us.
How long is the score valid? +
Two years from the test date.
Can I retake immediately if I am unhappy? +
Yes, after a 30-day waiting period. You can take up to 3 attempts in any 30-day window. Most Kerala students don't need to retake once they've done one focused prep round with us.
Which universities should I check first? +
Always check your specific target universities' accepted exams. Most US universities (including state schools, top private universities, Ivy League) now accept Duolingo, though some have a minimum score requirement higher than for IELTS. Canada (UofT, McGill, UBC), Australia (some Group of Eight), Ireland (Trinity, UCD), and UK (Russell Group) accept it widely too.
