From Kerala
to a UK Masters
and a 2-year stay.

Why UK

Four reasons Kerala families pick the UK first.

The UK is not the cheapest destination, but the post-study rules make it one of the most financially rewarding over a 5-year horizon. Here is why.

⏱️
Stay after graduation

18-month Graduate Route, automatic

The UK is one of the only major destinations where the post-study work visa is automatic. No employer sponsorship needed for the first 2 years. Stay, work in any role, build savings, transition to a Skilled Worker visa when you find your career role. PhD graduates get 3 years.

🛂
Settlement is on the table

PR pathway in 5 years

After 5 years on a Skilled Worker visa (started after the Graduate Route), you become eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain. After 6 years, you can apply for British citizenship. The legal pathway is clear and well-trodden by Indians.

🗣️
English-speaking

No language barrier, no language exam delay

IELTS or PTE is the only language requirement, and most Kerala students clear band 6.5 in 6 to 8 weeks of focused preparation. No 12-month language detour like Germany requires. You can go from decision to landing in 8 to 11 months.

🤝
Strong Kerala diaspora

You will not be alone

London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leicester, Glasgow all have established Malayali communities. Malayalam-speaking churches, Onam celebrations, food shops carrying coconut oil and matta rice. Family who already migrated can help with first-week settling.

The full journey

Eight to eleven months from Trivandrum to a UK lecture hall.

The UK admissions cycle has two main intakes: September (the big one) and January (smaller, with fewer scholarships). Plan backwards from your target intake.

1

Profile assessment and university shortlist

2 weeks

Senior counsellor reviews your transcripts, work experience, target field, and budget. We shortlist 6 to 10 universities across three tiers (ambitious, on-target, safe), with realistic admission probability for each.

2

IELTS or PTE preparation

6 to 10 weeks

Most UK Masters need IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6.0 minimum in each band. We run weekend-intensive batches at Cokonet Academy. First-attempt clearance is the norm for our cohort.

3

Application package

3 to 6 weeks

SOP drafting and editing, LOR coordination, financial documents, transcripts attestation. Most universities use direct online applications. Some need UCAS (undergrad). We handle both.

4

Offer letters and decision

4 to 12 weeks

Universities respond on a rolling basis. Most students get 2 to 4 offers. We help you compare them on financials, ranking, city, and post-study placement strength to pick the right one.

5

CAS letter, visa filing and biometrics

4 to 8 weeks

CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) issued by the university. Student Route visa application, financial proof of 28-day balance, TB test, biometrics at VFS. Visa decision typically within 3 weeks.

6

Pre-departure and landing

2 to 4 weeks

Forex, insurance, SIM card, UK bank account paperwork, accommodation booking (university or private), airport pickup, induction week orientation. Most students fly out 7 to 10 days before classes start.

The Graduate Route

2 years to find a job. No employer sponsorship needed.

This is the rule that makes the UK financially viable for Kerala students. Let us be specific about how it works.

How it actually works

  • 1
You graduate from a UK university with a Bachelors or Masters. Your university tells the Home Office, automatically.
  • 2
You apply for the Graduate Route from inside the UK. £822 application fee plus £1,035 Immigration Health Surcharge per year. Takes about 8 weeks.
  • 3
You get 2 years (3 if you have a PhD). During this time you can work in any job, change employers freely, start a business, or pursue further study.
  • 4
No employer sponsorship needed for the Graduate Route itself. This is the key. You are not waiting for a company to sponsor you. You can take any job from day one.
  • 5
Switch to Skilled Worker when ready. Once you find a career role with a UK employer who has a sponsor licence, your visa switches and the 5-year ILR clock starts.
Year 1 income
£24-32K
Entry-level non-sponsored roles. ≈ ₹25-34 lakh per year. Comfortable single income in most UK cities outside London.
Year 3 onward
£40-55K
Skilled Worker visa salary range for sponsored career roles. Tech, finance, healthcare pay higher. Significant savings possible.
Path to settlement

From student visa to British citizenship.

The full legal timeline. Six years if everything goes smoothly. Seven if you choose to apply for citizenship after PR.

Year 1
UK Masters
1-year degree, Student Route visa. Part-time work allowed (20 hrs/week).
Year 2-3
Graduate Route
2 years to find a career. Any job, any employer, no sponsorship needed.
Year 4-8
Skilled Worker
Employer-sponsored role. 5 years on this visa starts the ILR clock.
Year 8
ILR
Indefinite Leave to Remain. UK permanent residence. No more visa renewals.
Year 9+
Citizenship
British passport. Apply after 1 year of ILR. Naturalisation test required.

UK immigration rules change every year or two. The timeline above reflects 2026 rules. We review your specific case and flag any policy risks on the first counsellor call.

Frequently asked

UK-specific questions Kerala parents ask.

Has the UK tightened student visa rules recently? +
Yes. Since January 2024, most non-research postgraduate students cannot bring dependants (spouse, children) during their studies. After moving to the Graduate Route or Skilled Worker visa, dependants can join. The Graduate Route itself remains intact through 2026.
What IELTS score do I need? +
Most Masters require 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Some courses (especially journalism, law, healthcare) require 7.0+. Some Pre-Masters and language pathway programs accept 5.5 and let you upgrade in the UK. We map the right score for your target universities.
Is the UK affordable compared to other destinations? +
Not the cheapest at entry. A UK Masters runs ₹35 to 50 lakh total. But over a 5-year horizon, the Graduate Route lets you earn back the investment faster than most destinations because you can start work the day after graduation, no sponsorship friction. Most students clear their education loan in 3 to 5 years of UK earnings.
What if I do not find a job in the 18-month Graduate Route window? +
You can return to India having earned a UK Masters and 2 years of international experience, which is itself valuable on Indian salaries. But the more realistic answer: students who use the 2 years actively (network, build a portfolio, apply broadly) find roles. Tech, healthcare, accounting, and engineering have the highest sponsor conversion rates.
Can my spouse work in the UK while I study? +
Generally no for the duration of a 1-year Masters (under the 2024 rules). Once you switch to Skilled Worker or PhD, spouse can join on a dependant visa with full work rights. Research-track students retain dependant rights from year 1.
How are UK universities different from American ones for Kerala students? +
Three big differences: UK Masters are typically 1 year (vs 2 in the US), tuition is lower at most non-elite UK universities, and post-study work visa is automatic in the UK. The US still wins on tech-specific opportunities at FAANG-tier employers, but for healthcare, business, and engineering Masters, the UK has a clearer ROI.
Do I need to take GMAT or GRE? +
Most UK Masters do not require GMAT or GRE. Even top business schools like London Business School and Oxford Saïd typically accept strong academic records and work experience without GMAT. Exception: some specific quantitative finance, computer science PhDs, and a few US-style MBA programmes.
