Why Germany

Four reasons Kerala families pick Germany.

The case for Germany is mostly economic. Free tuition, strong job market, low cost of living relative to UK or US, and a clear settlement pathway. The trade-off is the German language requirement.

💰
Tuition

Public universities charge zero tuition

Yes, free. Bavaria, Berlin, Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia all run world-class universities with €0 tuition for international students. Most charge only a semester contribution fee of €150 to €350 (which covers public transport and student services). One of the biggest financial advantages of any global destination.

🛂
Stay and work

18-month Job Seeker Visa, automatic

After graduation, you get 18 months on a Job Seeker Visa to find a job in your field. No employer sponsorship needed during this window. Most graduates find roles within 6 to 9 months because Germany's labour market has been hungry for skilled workers for over a decade.

🏛️
Settlement

PR in 21 months with EU Blue Card

Engineering, IT, science, and healthcare graduates qualify for the EU Blue Card if salary exceeds the threshold (typically €45,000+ in 2026). With Blue Card, you can apply for German Permanent Residence in just 21 months if you reach B1 German, or 33 months without it. Faster than almost any other major destination.

🏙️
Cost of living

Lower than UK, France, or Netherlands

Outside Munich and Frankfurt, monthly living costs run €800 to €1,000 (food, rent, transport, utilities). Smaller university towns like Aachen, Stuttgart, Hannover are even more affordable. Combined with free tuition, the total cost of a Masters in Germany is often half that of the UK.

The full journey

14 to 18 months from Trivandrum to a German lecture hall.

German admissions move differently from UK or US. The language preparation phase is the longest, and shapes everything after.

1

Profile review and program shortlist

2 to 3 weeks

Senior counsellor reviews your academic background, target field, and budget. For Germany, the big decision is English-taught Masters (faster, ~50% of programs) vs German-taught (cheaper, more options, requires B2). Most Kerala students choose English-taught Masters.

2

German language: A1 to B1 minimum

6 to 9 months

Even for English-taught programs, German B1 is strongly recommended for living, networking, and the Job Seeker Visa. Daily Cokonet Academy classes at Ulloor Junction. Healthcare-vocabulary modules added for medical students. ₹30,000/month stipend during the training period for Cokonet Overseas students.

3

University applications via uni-assist

6 to 8 weeks

Most German universities use uni-assist, a centralised application portal. Documents need APS certification (Akademische Prüfstelle, the Indian-credential verification body). We handle uni-assist filing, APS, transcripts, and SOP per university.

4

Admission letters and APS interview

8 to 12 weeks

Universities respond on a fixed cycle (March/April for winter semester, October for summer semester). APS interview happens at the German Embassy in New Delhi. We do mock interviews specifically for the APS format.

5

Blocked account, visa filing, biometrics

4 to 6 weeks

Open a German blocked account (Sperrkonto) with €11,904 deposit (2026 amount) as financial proof. National D-Visa filing at German Embassy Delhi or Mumbai. Health insurance, accommodation paperwork.

6

Pre-departure and landing

2 to 4 weeks

Forex, SIM card, German bank account opening paperwork, accommodation handover (university or private), city registration appointment (Anmeldung). Airport pickup arranged through Cokonet alumni network in your university city.

The Job Seeker Visa

18 months to find a job. No employer sponsorship needed.

This is the German equivalent of the UK Graduate Route. The visa that makes Germany financially viable for Kerala students.

How it actually works

  • 1
You graduate from a German recognised university with a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD.
  • 2
Apply for the Job Seeker Visa at your local Foreigners Office before your student visa expires. €100 fee, financial proof of self-support for 18 months.
  • 3
Get 18 months to find a job. You can work in any role during this period (full-time, part-time, freelance) while job hunting in your degree field.
  • 4
Find a qualifying job that matches your degree. The job switches your visa automatically to either a Work Permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) or an EU Blue Card if salary is above €45,000.
  • 5
EU Blue Card is the fast lane to permanent residence. With B1 German, PR eligibility kicks in at 21 months. Without B1, at 33 months.
Year 1 income
€45-60K
Entry-level salary for engineering, IT, sciences. ≈ ₹40-54 lakh per year. Above the Blue Card threshold.
Year 3 onward
€65-85K
Mid-level salary in tech, automotive, finance. Munich and Frankfurt pay highest. After 21 months on Blue Card and B1 German, eligible for PR.
Path to settlement

From student visa to German citizenship.

The full legal timeline if everything goes smoothly. Five to seven years total to citizenship. Among the fastest in Europe.

Year 1-2
German Masters
Free tuition at public uni. Part-time work allowed (120 full days/yr).
Year 2-3.5
Job Seeker Visa
18 months post-grad to find a role. Any job, no sponsorship needed.
Year 3.5-5.5
EU Blue Card
For engineers, IT, scientists earning €45K+. 21 months to PR with B1 German.
Year 5-6
Permanent Residence
Niederlassungserlaubnis. No more visa renewals. Full work freedom.
Year 6-7
Citizenship
German passport. EU citizenship. Naturalisation test + B1 German required.

Timeline above reflects 2026 rules for EU Blue Card holders with B1 German. Without Blue Card or B1, settlement takes 8 to 10 years. Rules can change; we review your specific case during the first counsellor call.

💳
Education loan or self-funded, either works
Because tuition is free, the total cost is significantly lower than UK or US. Many Kerala families self-fund Germany without an education loan. HDFC Credila and Avanse cover the gap when needed. Blocked account proof is the main financial milestone.
The German language part

German B1 is the difference between visiting and belonging.

English-taught Masters programs exist (about half of all programs), so technically you can finish your degree without German. But the Job Seeker Visa is harder without German. Most employers prefer at least B1. And PR eligibility unlocks faster with B1.

We make this simple: every Cokonet Overseas student going to Germany gets bundled German language training, A1 to B1 minimum, taught at Cokonet Academy in Trivandrum and Kochi. Faculty have lived in Germany. The training is included in your package.

Frequently asked

Germany-specific questions Kerala families ask.

Is tuition really free, even for Indian students? +
Yes. Most public universities in Germany charge zero tuition for all students, including non-EU internationals. The only state that recently introduced tuition for non-EU students is Baden-Württemberg, charging €1,500/semester (still way below UK or US). All other states remain free.
Do I need German to study an English-taught Masters? +
Technically no. But practically yes, at least B1. The Job Seeker Visa is much harder to use without German, since most employers prefer it. Daily life outside university (banks, housing, healthcare, government offices) runs primarily in German. We make B1 part of every Cokonet Germany package.
What is APS and why does my Indian degree need it? +
APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) is the German Embassy's verification body for Indian academic credentials. Every Indian student going to Germany must clear an APS interview to confirm their degree authenticity. It includes a basic technical interview in your field. We run mock APS sessions specifically formatted for it.
Can I work while studying? +
Yes. International students can work 120 full days or 240 half days per year. Most students do part-time work at €10 to €15/hour in cafes, retail, university research positions, or German-startup internships. Tech part-time work pays €15 to €25/hour.
What if my Masters is English-taught? Does APS still apply? +
APS still applies because it verifies your prior degree (your Indian Bachelors), not your future Masters. The Masters program's language of instruction is separate.
Munich is expensive. Is Germany still affordable then? +
Munich and Frankfurt are about 25 to 35 percent more expensive than smaller cities. But places like Aachen, Stuttgart, Hannover, Dresden, Leipzig run very affordable. Total cost of living for a student in those cities is €800 to €1,000 per month, often less than what Kerala families spend on hostel-fee plus mess at private Indian engineering colleges.
I am a nurse. Is this the right page for me? +
No, you have your own dedicated pathway. Germany has specific healthcare migration rules with separate documentation and faster timelines for nurses. See our Healthcare to Germany pathway for the full nursing route.
