IELTS is the
single exam that unlocks five countries.

UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland. One certificate, one score, every visa accepts it. Most Kerala students need band 6.5 overall for Masters admissions, 6.0 for undergrad, 7.0+ for healthcare licensing. Where you land on that scale shapes everything that follows.

What each band unlocks

Pick your target band by what it gets you.

IELTS is scored on a 0 to 9 scale across four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Your overall band is the average. Universities and visa systems set minimum cut-offs. Here is the practical mapping.

5.5
Modest
Foundation pathway entry
Reads simple texts, speaks slowly with pauses, writes short paragraphs with errors. Many cohort students start here.
Some UK Pre-Masters, foundation programs, language pathway programs. Diploma-level study in Canada and Australia. Spouse dependant visas.
6.0
Competent
Most undergrad and some PR
Functional English. Can hold workplace conversations, write structured short essays, follow university lectures with some effort.
Most UK undergrad. Australia / Canada PR points threshold for English. NZ skilled migration entry.
6.5
Competent+
The Masters sweet spot
What most Kerala students aim for. Comfortable at this level after 6 to 10 weeks of focused prep if starting from 5.5+.
Most UK / Australia / Canada / Ireland Masters. NZ Bachelors. The single most common Cokonet target band.
7.0
Good
Healthcare and premium courses
Reads complex academic texts, writes structured essays with nuance, speaks fluently with rare errors.
Healthcare professional registration (UK NHS for non-nurses, NMC for nurses), top UK universities (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE), some Canada PR streams.
7.5+
Very good
Top universities and immigration premium
Reads native-level material, writes academic-quality essays, speaks fluently with subtle nuance.
Top Russell Group competitive programs, Australia and Canada PR points premium tier, faculty positions, scholarship eligibility.
8.0+
Excellent
Maxes out PR points
Native or near-native command. Subtle stylistic register switches, idiomatic precision.
Maximum CRS points in Canada Express Entry. Above what most universities require. Rare even with intensive prep.
How our coaching works

The four sections, taught as four separate skills.

Most coaching mixes everything together. We separate the four bands and teach each one with its own faculty and its own techniques.

🎧
40 questions · 30 mins

Listening

Four recordings: a daily-life dialogue, a monologue (museum tour, lecture), an academic discussion, and an academic lecture. Plays once. Cannot pause.

What we drill
Note-taking under time pressure, accent variations (British / Australian / North American mix), keyword anticipation, spelling accuracy.
📖
40 questions · 60 mins

Reading

Three long passages (Academic) or 5 short + 2 long (General Training). Academic uses journal-style texts. General Training uses everyday materials.

What we drill
Skimming for gist vs scanning for facts, paraphrase recognition (paraphrases ARE the test), tackling True / False / Not Given questions.
✍️
2 tasks · 60 mins

Writing

Task 1: describe a chart/graph (Academic) or write a letter (GT). Task 2: a 250-word essay. Task 2 carries double the weight.

What we drill
Essay structure (4-paragraph template), task response (answering ALL parts of the prompt), coherence and cohesion, lexical range without over-reaching.
🎙️
11 to 14 mins · 1-on-1

Speaking

Face-to-face with a certified examiner (in-centre or video). Three parts: warm-up Q&A, 2-min monologue from a cue card, abstract discussion.

What we drill
Fluency over perfection, idiomatic expressions used naturally, pronunciation clarity (Kerala accent is fine, mumbling is not), examiner small-talk technique.

Why we mock-test so often

Bands move when you measure them weekly.

Most students walk into the official IELTS exam without ever having sat through a real 2-hour 45-minute exam under time pressure. They have practiced sections but never the full sequence. This is where bands drop.

Our batches run full-length mock tests on a fixed weekly cadence. By the time you sit the official exam, you have already done 6 to 12 of them. The format is no longer the obstacle. Your actual English is.

The exam itself

Paper-based vs computer-delivered. Pick the right one.

Same exam content, same scoring, two delivery modes. Most Kerala students benefit from the computer-delivered version for faster results.

💻

Computer-delivered

Most common · faster results
  • 1Same questions, computer screen instead of paper booklet
  • 2Results in 3 to 5 days
  • 3Better for typists (Writing section especially)
  • 4Available almost daily at British Council Bengaluru and Cochin centres
  • 5Speaking is still face-to-face on the same or next day
📝

Paper-based

Traditional · slower results
  • 1Pen and paper, the original format
  • 2Results in 13 days
  • 3Better if you prefer marking up question booklets
  • 4Limited slots, usually 1 to 2 dates per month
  • 5Speaking is on a different day from the written exam
Exam fee: ₹19,000 for either format (2026 British Council rate). Paid directly to British Council during exam registration. Cokonet does not handle or process exam fees, you book your slot directly.
Five mistakes that cost bands

If you have failed IELTS once before, this is probably why.

These are the patterns we see in students who come to us for re-test prep. None of them are about English ability. They are about exam strategy.

1

Memorising sample answers for Speaking

Examiners are trained to spot rehearsed responses, and they will deliberately disrupt your script to test if you can think in English. The moment you sound memorised, your fluency score drops. Practice the structure of answers, not the words themselves.

2

Writing without a 4-paragraph structure

Task 2 essays score on coherence and cohesion. A 4-paragraph structure (intro, two body paragraphs each making one point, conclusion) is the safe pattern. Students who write one long flowing essay typically lose 0.5 to 1 band on coherence alone.

3

Ignoring the 'Not Given' option in Reading

True / False / Not Given questions trip up most Kerala students. They assume Not Given is rare and pick True or False instead. In reality, about a third of these questions are Not Given. Reading the question literally, not what you assume, is the trick.

4

Speaking too slowly to seem careful

Speaking band scores fluency and coherence as 25% of the total. Students who pause for every word to find the right one come across as struggling, even if their vocabulary is excellent. Faster, slightly imperfect speech scores higher than slow, perfect speech.

5

Spelling errors in Listening

Half the Listening section asks you to write down what you hear (names, numbers, dates, single words). Misspelled answers are marked wrong, even if you heard correctly. British vs American spelling are both accepted, but you have to be consistent within the answer.

Frequently asked

IELTS-specific questions Kerala students ask.

IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL vs Duolingo, which should I pick? +
Pick by where you are going. IELTS is the universal default, accepted by UK, Australia, Canada, NZ, Ireland, and many US universities. PTE is computer-based with faster results, preferred by Australia and increasingly by Canada. TOEFL iBT is the traditional US choice and still preferred at many US universities. Duolingo English Test is the fastest and cheapest, accepted by 5000+ universities globally but not yet for most work visa or PR applications. We coach all four. Start with our diagnostic call and we will pick the right one for your specific destination.
How long does it take to clear IELTS from scratch? +
If you are starting from a typical Kerala higher-secondary English level (around band 5.0 to 5.5), expect 6 to 10 weeks of focused preparation to hit band 6.5. To hit 7.0+, allow 10 to 14 weeks. Students already at band 6.0 typically need 4 to 6 weeks to reach 6.5 or 7.0. Your first diagnostic mock test will tell us where you actually are.
Is IELTS Academic or General Training better for me? +
Pick by purpose, not by ease. Academic is for studying abroad (Masters, Bachelors, PhD). General Training is for work visas, immigration, and PR programs (Canada Express Entry, Australia / NZ skilled migration). Choosing the wrong one means re-taking the entire exam. The Reading and Writing sections differ; Listening and Speaking are identical.
What is the cost breakdown, all in? +
Coaching: ₹9,000 to ₹15,000 at Cokonet depending on format. Exam fee: ₹19,000 paid directly to British Council. Total: ₹26,000 to ₹32,000 for first attempt. If you need a re-test, the exam fee is paid again but coaching re-prep is free for our cohort students.
How long is the IELTS score valid? +
Two years from the exam date. Most universities, work visa schemes, and immigration programs require a score that is less than 2 years old at the time of application (not at the time of decision). Plan backwards from your application deadline, not your enrolment date.
Can I take the exam multiple times? +
Yes, with no cooling-off period. You can re-take as soon as you can book the next available slot, which is usually within 1 to 2 weeks. Each attempt is a fresh score; your previous attempts do not affect the new one. You report whichever score you want to your university or visa application.
Is computer-delivered easier than paper-based? +
Easier only if you are a comfortable typist. The content and scoring are identical. The advantages of computer-delivered: results in 3 to 5 days instead of 13, more frequent test dates, no handwriting legibility issues in Writing. The disadvantage: you cannot annotate the question booklet during Reading. Most Kerala students under 30 do better on computer-delivered.
How is Speaking scored? Can the accent affect my band? +
Speaking is scored on Fluency and Coherence (25%), Lexical Resource (25%), Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%), and Pronunciation (25%). Pronunciation is about being understood, not about sounding British or American. Indian English is fine. What hurts is mumbling, swallowing word endings, and unclear consonants. We work on those specifically.
What if I do not hit my target band on the first attempt? +
First, that is normal for about 40 percent of students. Second, our coaching includes free re-test prep, you only pay the exam fee again. Third, your IELTS attempt history is not shared with universities; you simply report your best score. Most universities accept your latest valid score regardless of how many attempts you took.
